Ajax vs Verisure: Which Alarm Is Right For You?

Updated May 2026 · 6 min read

Ajax and Verisure both protect your home. Both are widely respected. Both work. But they’re built around fundamentally different business models, and once you understand that, the choice becomes much easier.

Here’s an honest, installer-led comparison, the kind you’d get if you asked your neighbour who happens to fit alarms for a living.

The big difference: ownership vs subscription

Ajax is sold as equipment. You buy it, an installer fits it, and you own it. There are no ongoing fees. The Ajax app, notifications and control are free for the life of the system.

Verisure is sold as a service. You pay an upfront installation fee, then a monthly subscription typically between £30 and £60 for 24 to 36 months. The equipment is leased, if you cancel, it goes back.

Neither is wrong. They’re different products for different buyers.

Cost over time

A typical professional Ajax install in the UK costs around £900 to £2,500 depending on property size. After that, ongoing cost is zero (unless you choose optional monitoring).

A Verisure setup typically has a lower upfront cost (often £200–£600) but a monthly fee that adds up. Over three years at £40 per month, that’s £1,440 in fees on top of the install. Over five years it’s £2,400. Over ten years it’s £4,800.

If you stay in your home for five years or more, an Ajax install almost always works out cheaper than Verisure, often by thousands.

What you get with each

Ajax

  • Grade 2 certified wireless equipment, owned by you
  • Up to 7-year sensor battery life
  • Free smartphone app with arm/disarm, status, notifications, photo verification
  • Optional professional monitoring through an ARC if you want it
  • Expandable, add sensors, cameras and smoke detectors at your own pace

Verisure

  • Professional installation included
  • 24/7 monitoring by a UK Alarm Receiving Centre
  • Private security guard response on confirmed intrusion
  • ZeroVision smoke barrier on premium plans
  • Maintenance and equipment swaps covered by the contract
  • App control included with subscription

Who should choose Ajax?

You should pick Ajax if you want to own your security setup, you’re comfortable managing the app yourself, you plan to stay in your home for several years, and you don’t want recurring charges. Most UK homeowners we install for fall into this category.

Who should choose Verisure?

Verisure makes sense if you specifically want professional 24/7 monitoring and a security guard response, you prefer a managed service to owning the equipment, and you’re comfortable with a fixed monthly outgoing. Common for higher-risk properties or owners who travel a lot.

The middle ground

You can actually have the best of both. Install Ajax, own the equipment, and then optionally add monitoring through an independent ARC if you decide you want it later. This gives you flexibility a Verisure contract doesn’t, you can switch monitoring providers or drop monitoring entirely without losing your alarm.
